Big Wrench Sessions

I met Brian Whiton in the frozen midwest of the 90s and we’ve been good friends and occasional bandmates ever since. Brian learned everything there was to know about pianos, and, in 2011, opened Big Wrench Piano Care, a unique showroom of restored pianos in the heart of Brooklyn. I studied gizmos and gadgets, and when Brian came across some well-worn vintage EPs, he handled the mechanicals and called me in for the electronics. A chance meeting between our hot-rodded Wurlitzer 200A and cabaret musician Phil Kadet was caught on tape, and resulted in the first Big Wrench Session in 2012.

Session 2 brought Brooklyn-based pianist Billy White into the store, along with Grammy-nominee Maiysha Kai (vocals), Hagai Cohen-Milo (bass), and Josh Davis (drums). They put down classics, new songs and originals compositions.

The project lives on tumblrvimeo and youtube. We hope to continue to record talented musicians on Brian’s lovingly-restored instruments.
